Zephaniah HOLCOMB served as a private in Capt. Abner HAWLEY'S company, 8th regiment, Albany county, NY Militia, American Revolution. In General George Washington's Army for 7 years, being assistant paymaster at the end of the war (Ref,: N.S.D.A.R.,)Nat. No. 72338).
He was married three times, but his third wife's name is unknown.

........
Zephaniah Holcomb is enumerated in the town of Butternuts in 1800 and is found in a neighborhood several miles south of Barnabas Kinney, along the lower end of the Butternut Creek. He is referred to as "Capt. Holcomb" on the Tax Assessment records, 1800, 1801, 1802, 1803, and General Store records 1802. He also appears in another General Store record for 1815, 1816, 1817 along with his son Abner.

Zephaniah removed from Butternuts, Otsego, Co, NY to Norwich County, NY, some time after 1817, where he is enumerated on the 1820 US Census in Norwich, Chenango Co, NY.

After Zephaniah's death, in March 1822,nearly all of his children had moved to other parts of New York and/or Gallia County, Ohio.

He may be buried somewhere in Norwich, most likely on the family farm. A relative wrote and said he was here.

Burial place discussion:

Spencertown Cemetery - Spencertown, Columbia, NY - John P. Wilcox

Evergreen Cemetery - Norwich, Chenango, NY - Bordona, Julia.

Recently I came across a memorial for (my direct line)  Zephaniah Holcomb #100195310 for which I requested a change.  It stated that he was buried in Spencertown Cemetery in Spencertown, NY (now Columbia County) - info right out of the above mentioned McPherson lineage book.  I know he did not die there or was buried there because he moved to Norwich, Chenango Co, NY some time after 1817, where he is enumerated on the 1820 census.  He purchased a 100 acre farm in Norwich, Chenango Co, NY.  One of the last things he did before his death was to set aside a portion of his farm to the Norwich School District #14 for the building of a school, then he sold the rest of his land to his son, Robert Burgess Holcomb for $450 (30 Jan 1822, Deed Bk. 70:3).  I do not think his family hauled his body 145 miles back to Spencertown, Albany Co, NY for burial.  The Holcomb Family Bible, owned by Robert Burgess Holcomb family, lists Zephaniah's birth and death dates, not place, but I do honestly think that folks back then were buried in the town where they died, not hauled 100 miles or more away.  This is not the saga of "Lonesome Dove." lol - Bordona, Julia.
