Ret. Lt. Col. E. R. (Bob) Henningsen, 86, of Stephenville, Texas, retired professor from Tarleton State University and owner of Sammye's Candy Store, died Saturday, January 1, 2011, surrounded by family and friends at the Oakwood Assisted Living Facility. Services will be 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 5, 2011, with Military Honors at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Howard Martin, and Rev. Tom Konz officiating. Visitation will be 7:00-9:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at Lacy Funeral Home. Burial will be at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, January 6, 2011, at Floydada Cemetery, Floydada, Texas.
He was born on August 9, 1924, to the late Herman and Esther (Brandt) Henningsen in Grand Mound, Iowa. He graduated from Grand Mound High School in 1941. He married Sammye Thagard on January 8, 1945, in Clovis, New Mexico. She preceded him in death on May 10, 1999. He was a lifetime member of the DAV and was a WWII and Korean War Air Force Veteran. Bob entered the Army Air Force in 1943 and graduated Aviation Cadets as a 2nd Lieutenant in April 1944. He continued flight training and transitioned to the B-17 group in Roswell, New Mexico. He became a flight instructor (B-17's) in Amarillo, Texas, where he met his wife of 55 years. In 1945, he transferred to the B-29 training program in Roswell, New Mexico, where he made Captain and remained in service until 1948. He was mobilized for the Korean War and reassigned to Roswell as a B-29 flight instructor and finished his military career in the U. S. Air Force Reserves where he achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel. After retiring from the service, he worked various jobs for several years (Photography and Sales) before he enrolled in 1953 at the University of Texas. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science in May 1957. In August 1957, he began his 32 year teaching career at Tarleton State University, in Stephenville, Texas. He obtained a Masters of Science from Baylor University in 1960 and retired as Associate Professor Emeritus in 1991. Sammye and Bob started their own business in 1982 (Sammye's Candy-Bookworm & Baseball Card Shop) which he still currently owned and operated. Local area students enjoyed receiving free candy for their straight A report cards. His three sons, Brandt received his Doctorate of Biology in 1985, Curtis received his BBA in 1978, and Sam received his BBA in 1990. Bob worked with Boy Scouts of America and was Cubmaster of Pack 18 and active with Troop 39. All three sons and two grandsons obtained the Rank of Eagle Scout.
Bob was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher. Bob has been blessed over the years with good health, a very supportive and tight knit family. He was always appreciative of the opportunities that came his way and for all the friends and loved ones that he enjoyed and who shared them with him throughout his life.
Survivors include sons, Dr. Brandt Henningsen and wife, Lisa, of Wesley Chapel, Florida, Curtis Robert Henningsen and wife, Karen, of Avondale, Arizona, and Sam Henningsen and wife, Debbie, of Stephenville, Texas; four grandchildren, Corbin Henningsen, Farrahn Henningsen, Colin Henningsen, and Forest Henningsen; and his extended family-the staff and residents of Oakwood Assisted Living.
