John L Raines moved his family from Bedford County to Tazewell County, Virginia just before the Civil War started. His wife, Cynthia died before him, around 1861 in Tazewell County, after which he moved to Wayne County, West Virginia with his daughter Mary Raines Farra and her family.
John was recorded in the 1880 Wayne County census at age 74, and had died before the 1900 census. He is either buried in Wayne County near Dunlow, or he returned to Tazewell County and is buried where his wife Cynthia is buried.
