William "Bill" Lanier was a large land owner in the Rosemary Community of Candler County. His homeplace and log home are still standing and in fair condition. Bill managed a large farming operation. He was active in community affairs and was a Justice of the Peace for that area of Emanuel County. He was a tax commissioner of Emanuel County and served on its first Public School Board of Education. After his daughters married, he turned over much of the farming operation to them to manage. Bill was one of the founders of the Cleveland Academy and served as one of its trustees. "Bow-legged Bill," as he was then known, was a very religious man and attended Rosemary and Antioch Primitive Baptist Churches.
