Mr. Arthur W. "Art" Schrepel, 96, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at his home. Mr. Schrepel was born in St. Louis, Mo., January 26, 1911. He had been a resident of Statesboro since his marriage to Helen Allen in 1943. He was honored in 2003 as the oldest living WWII veteran in Bulloch County. Mr. Schrepel was drafted in 1941: discharged because he was over 30, and then called back on January 23, 1942 after the war broke out. He was in the Army-Air Force, serving as Staff Sergeant, 32nd Engineering Training Battalion. The second time he was called up he was in the 302nd Bombardment Squadron, Army-Air Force, then the 312th Bomb Group and the 387th Squadron. He served in New Zealand, Australia, New Guinea and the Southern Phillipines, Luzon. He was decorated with three Bronze Stars for his service.

Mr. Schrepel was raised in the Lutheran faith, but in later years embraced the Baptist faith. His favorite minister was Dr. Billy Graham. He retired from Bulloch Tractor Company, the John Deere Dealer in Statesboro in 1976 after many years of service.

Survivors include: his wife of 64 years, Helen Allen Schrepel; two daughters, Jessie S. Roberts and Kathryn A. Schrepel, all of Statesboro; one son and his wife, William Arthur "Bill" and Brenda Brown Schrepel of Stilson; two grandsons, Eric A. Schrepel of Atlanta and David W. Schrepel of Pooler; one granddaughter, Cynthia Roberts Besser and her husband, Earl E. Besser of Statesboro; two great-granddaughters, Marissa Besser of San Antonio, Texas and Leeanna Besser of Statesboro; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, JoAnne and Gerald B. Strozzo of Brooklet; sister-in-law, Katie Allen Ellis of Americus and brother-in-law and his wife, Mel C. and Martha Boatman of Statesboro; eighteen nieces and nephews; and last but not least he is survived by his dog, Tip S. Roberts.

The graveside funeral service and burial will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Eastside Cemetery with Dr. Bill Perry officiating.
