Mr. William Lewis "R.L." Conley, age 67, died Tuesday Aug. 10, 2010 at his home.
Mr. Conley was a lifelong resident of Pembroke and never left Pembroke except for a two year tour of duty during the Vietnam War. During his time in Vietnam, he received the Bronze Star. Mr. Conley later retired from the National Guard with 16 years of service and over 20 years of service with the Department of Transportation where he was a heavy equipment operator. He was an honest and modest man with a heart of gold. Mr. R.L. enjoyed painting; loved country music, old western movies and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church for over 40 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents William and Maggie Conley and sister Gail Conley Lanier all of Pembroke.
Survivors include one daughter, Lynn Smith; two grandchildren, Cheyanne Smith and David Sikes all of Maryland; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Vincent and Dannis Conley of Pembroke and Benny and Pat Conley of Augusta; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Julia Ennis of Pembroke, Betty Gibson of Claxton, Alice and Mike Van Buren of Atlanta, Mary and Eugene Howard of St. Mary's; best friend, E. Billy Miles of Pembroke; and many nieces and nephews.
A heart-felt thank you goes to family friends Laverne and Gene Scott, Shirley Wallace, Gene and Kim Hartman and family, and the caregivers at Ogeechee Area Hospice.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, August 12, at Flanders Morrison Funeral Home with Elder Spencer Moore officiating. Interment will be in Beulah Baptist Cemetery.
Flanders Morrison Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
