The son of Malachi & Ruby H. (Crapo) Reynolds, he married Louisa B. DeVoll April 12, 1858, in Taunton, Massachusetts, and fathered Everett L. (b. @1861) and Cora J. (b. @1865). In 1860, he was a farmer and teamster living in Westport, Bristol County, Massachusetts, and stood 5' 9" tall with dark hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted September 9, 1862, mustered into federal service at Camp Stanton, Boxford, Essex County, Massachusetts, September 20, 1862, as a wagoner with Co. D, 47th Massachusetts Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company September 1, 1863, at Readville. Then, for reasons as yet unknown, he traveled to Pennsylvania where he enlisted in Harrisburg August 5, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 15 as a wagoner with Co. D, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 23, 1865.
