The younger son of Dr. (General) Corbin Braxton (Robert E. Lee's half-1st Cousin) and Mary Williamson Tomlin of Chericoke, King William County.His brother, William Armistead Braxton, was killed in 1864 while in "F" Co. of Mosby's Partisan Cavalry.His sisters were Fanny Churchill, Elizabeth Pope, and Lucy Tomlin.An 1854 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, he married Mary Caperton on 3 Jan 1861, and lived in Staunton, VA where they raised their children, Allen Taylor Caperton, Mary, Carter Tomlin, Hugh Caperton, and Eliza Williamson.
Having enlisted on 3/15/1861 as a Private, he was commissioned on 7/1/1861 into the Field & Staff of the 19th Virginia Infantry as an Assistant Surgeon.Captured in the Kanawha District, WV sometime in 5/1862, he was confined 5/30/1862 Camp Chase, OH, then paroled and released 6/19/1862.On 9/1/1862 he was transferred into the Field & Staff of the 30th Battalion, Virginia Sharpshooters.He was promoted to Major, Surgeon 10/3/1862.Transferred to Wharton's Brigade 3/8/1864.
He resettled in Maryland after war.
