Enlisted on September 10, 1861 at Yorktown, VA as a Private in the 2nd Company, Virginia Howitzers Light Artillery. Transferred on October 25, 1862 to the 55th Virginia Infantry, Company A. Promoted to Sergeant on October 25, 1862. Promoted to Second Lieutenant on May 15, 1863. Wounded on May 2, 1863 at Chancellorsville, Virginia and never rejoined his unit. He later served with Mosby's Partisian Cavalry, 43rd Battaion, Company B as a Captain.
After the war he attended the Medical College of Virginia where he received his
