Shim was a decorated U.S.Army Korean War Veteran. He was honorably discharged as a Master Sargeant. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Korean Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, the Korean Service Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Japanese Occupation Medal.
