Rex was a wonder dog. By wonder I mean, I think he always wondered about things. He might not have been the brightest dog on the planet but he was very loving, to us that is.
Jim and I got Rex when we were living in New Mexico. We had Bob the cat, Kitty and I really NEEDED a dog to make my life complete. I thought we would go together to the animal shelter but Jim had other ideas. He said I wasn't going because I wouldn't be happy with just one dog, I would have to save them all...
So, anyway, Jim came home from work one day with Rex. He picked him out of a few dogs. He always liked labs. Rex was kind of slow at first. He got a bucket stuck on his head and sat there. He didn't try to take it off, he just sat for a minute or two. We were too busy laughing to take it off. The thing was he didn't even care. He finally took it off though. So things were good...
Rex was a good dog for the most part. We found out he was being trained to be a hunting dog. Things didn't work out with that according to the pound. He was scared of the guns and the loud noises. He certainly never liked thunder or the sound of the vacuum or the hairdryer.
Later, we moved back to Indiana into a small place. We had neighbors directly behind us who had a little dog. Rex was very territorial and decided to get mean. I saved the little dog and stopped him from really hurting him. I had no idea he would try that. So we paid the vet bills for the neighbors dog and apologized several times.
After that, we decided he needed a larger place to run. We ended up giving him to one of my Dad's friends from work. He lived on a farm and had miles and miles of land for him and a girlfriend. She was a chocolate lab. They had a great life together, like a married couple the guy told us. He even sent us videos of Rex & she.
I was heartbroken I had to give him up but it was best for him and us. On the day the new owner picked Rex up, I let him finish the ice cream. He was all sticky when the guy came, but he understood.
We lost contact with the guy, but I know Rex had a wonderful life. I know he is gone now. I don't know when or how, but he is waiting to see me at the bridge...
