In 1860, Homer is an orphan, and is living at the Bridgewater Alms House with the occupation of 'Farm Boy'.

On 12 July 1861, Homer enlisted as a Private in Company I, Massachusetts 16th Infantry Regiment. He was captured on 3 June 1864 at Cold Harbor, Virginia. He was sent to Camp Sumter, commonly called Andersonville, where he died after 3 months of captivity.

Home has 2 cenotaphs in the Vernon Street Cemetery, shared with his brother, Charles and his own.
