Author. He was the first vision-impaired person to trek the Appalachian Trail. Afterwards, he became a motivational speaker and author, sharing his adventure. In 1990 he hiked the entire 2,168 miles of the Appalachian Trail unassisted by any other human persons, trail map, or GPS. His only companion was his trained seeing-eye dog, "Orient." His journey took him nine months. In 1992 the story of his historic trek was published under the title "Blind Courage." A film by the same title was adapted and released in 2016 posthumously. He died of prostate cancer.
