Richard Eugene Shaw, 89, of Oquawka, died Monday Feb. 23, 2009, at OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth. Born Aug. 10, 1919, in Belmont, son of Charles and Bernice Armstrong Shaw. On May 30, 1953, he married Erma L Peterson McMahon in Coldbrook, IL. He worked as a gas serviceman for Illinois Power Company for 36 years in the local area. He retired in 1981. He was raised in Alexis and Monmouth where he attended local schools. He enlisted in the Navy and served in China. He was a survivor of Pearl Harbor in 1941. Following the war, he also was in the National Guard and re-enlisted in the Army during the Korean War period for 18 months. He was a member of J.W. Clendenin Post 2301 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 44 American Legion in Gulf Shores, AL and the USS Saratoga Assoc. He enjoyed traveling and boating. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, 3 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. His body has been cremated. No visitation or funeral service is presently scheduled. His family plans a memorial service at a later date. Turnbull Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.
