He was married to Mary Cochran.

The USS Broome was named in his honor. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1848. His 40 years of service included action at Veracruz, Alvarado and Laguna del Carmen, Mexico. He played a prominent role in the capture of New Orleans as a senior Marine officer of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron and all engagements of the Squadron on the Mississippi River. He was wounded twice, once severely at the second Battle of Vicksburg on July 15, 1862. He was breveted three times for gallant and meritorious conduct in action. He retired from the Corps on March 8, 1888.

His Son, Capt. G.C. Broome, Married in Washington on the Day of Death
Binghamton, New York, April 12. Lieut. Colonel John Lloyd Broome died here today after an illness of several months. His son, Capt. George Cochrane Broome, was married this morning in Washington to Miss Barbour and started immediately for this city to reach the bedside of his father. The wedding which was to have taken place April 14 was hastened because of Colonel Broome's illness.

Colonel Broome was the only surviving son of Capt. John Lloyd Broome and a grandson of Lieut. Col. John Broome, an early Lieutenant Governor of New York State after whom Broome County was named. Deceased was born in New York City in 1824.
