Eighth of nine children of Rowland (Roland) C. Dare (1778-1861) & Elinor Cryer (1786-1840), he married Feb. 18, 1843 in Caldwell Co. KY his 1st cousin, Mary Janette Bradburn. The marriage register in Caldwell Co. gives her name as Mary Genette. The couple, with a son, moved to Jefferson Co. IL before the birth of daughter Sarah in Jul. 1847. No further record is found of Mary Janette.
On Nov. 26, 1848 in Caldwell Co. KY, James married his niece, Mary Matilda Cole Dare (17), who had been earlier married to their mutual cousin. They had 10 children. Mary Matilda was the daughter of Lewis and Sarah J. Dare Cole.
After Mary Matilda died in Dec. 1889, James married Mary Bamo on June 30, 1890 in Jefferson Co. She survived him.
One tradition holds James served in the U. S. Army, but which war is not clear and he has no military marker. His second wife and a grandson appear in South Hickory (Hills) Cem. His stone is not found there today.
