James was the son of James and Ellen (Stevens) Grubb. His parents were born in Delaware and were married April 1, 1841 in Holy Trinity (Old Swedes') Church. James, like his father, was a shoe maker. In 1850 his parents James, 37, and Elenor, 30, were living in Wilmington, Delaware with sons John S., 9, and James T., 4. The boys were born in Delaware. In 1860 James, 47, and Ellen, 35, were living in Wilmington, Delaware with children John S., 18, James T., 14, and Rebecca J., 9. James served in the 8th Delaware Infantry in the Civil War. He married Mary Casey, who was from Ireland. In 1880 his parents James, 67, a retired shoe dealer, and Ellen, 60, and James T., 34, a shoe clerk, were living at 327 Fourth St. His widow Mary was still living there in 1910.

His son Willard James Grubb was born June 22, 1897 in Wilmington, Delaware and died October 16, 1968 in Dade county, Florida. He served in the Marine Corps as a rifle range instructor during World War I. Willard J. Grubb and Irene M. Pierce were married July 21, 1934 in Wilmington, New Hanover county, North Carolina. They divorced in January 1961.
