Newton was born to Jacob and Amy Jones Westfall, being their 5th child (4th son) of 7 children (6 being boys).

At age 18 he joined the Union Army to fight in the Civil War on 09 Aug 1862 and then managed to survive being captured by the Confederates and placed in ANERSONVILLE PRISON for nearly a year then on Nov 11, 1864 he was transferred to Camp Lawton in Millen, Georgia, which was built to take some of the over crowding from Andersonville. How he or anyone survived either prison is a miracle to say the least. Newton was musterd out 12 Jun 1865 and Honorably discharged 20 June 1865, after service of 2 years & 10 months.

He married Mary Jane Redman 1 Apr 1868. To this union 7 children were born to them, with 5 surviving infancy. the 5 surviving children are all linked to them.

In 1885 he, his wife and children, with two of his brothers and their families moved to Bertrand, Phelps, Nebraska from their home town, joining another brother who had gone on a head of them.

By trade he was a Wagon Maker.

At the time of Mary Jane's death in 1926, they had been married 58 years, with him following her the next year.
