U.S. Congressman. A native of Lancaster, Ohio, he served as an officer in World War I as a fighter pilot with the famous "Yale Unit" in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Lieutenant. He graduated from Yale University in 1919, was a member of the Yale Skull and Bones Society, and completed his law studies at the Ohio State University Law School in 1923. He became an attorney and practiced law in Columbus, Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives in 1923 and 1924, and a member of the Ohio State Senate in 1925 and 1926. He was also a professor at Yale College in China. Vorys became the director of Ohio Aeronautics in 1929 and 1930. Elected as a Republican to represent Ohio's 12th District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1939 to 1959. He was reelected nine times, and declined to become a candidate in 1958. While a member of Congress, he was a delegate to the United Nations Assembly in 1951, and a regent of the Smithsonian Institution from 1949 to 1959. He also served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee during World War II and toured Germany with an inspection commission in 1945 after the collapse of the Nazi government. A famous photograph depicts him in an army helmet with General William B. Parsons at the Dachau concentration camp (soon after it was closed) in a room stacked with corpses. In 1959, he resumed his law profession in Franklin County, Ohio. He died at his residence in Columbus when he was 72 years old. (bio by: K Guy)
