John A. Gaspa, 88, Provincetown

PROVINCETOWN — John A. Gaspa, 88, of Provincetown, died on Oct. 1 at Royal Nursing Center in Falmouth.
He was born in Provincetown on May 20, 1921, to the late John and Margaret (Fitzgerald) Gaspa. He was married to Edith (Doyle) Gaspa for many years before her death on Feb. 20, 1986.
He was a veteran of WW II. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and saw service in the Pacific during the war serving on a tank landing ship, LST-788. He lowered the ramps to allow the soldiers and vehicles to disembark. He served in Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Saipan and was honorably discharged from the service on Nov. 2, 1945.
He and his wife Edith worked at Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut for many years.
They came back to Provincetown and lived there. Before his illness John worked at Duarte's parking lot on Bradford Street for many years.
He is survived by his brother George P. Gaspa and wife Elaine of Falmouth. John was predeceased by several siblings, Mary (Gaspa) Brock, Bridget (D'Avellar) Gaspa, Emanuel (Bing) Gaspa, and Elizabeth (Gaspa) McLaughlin, many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.
A memorial Mass will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church at a later date, to be announced.
