Indian Campaigns Medal of Honor Recipient. A native of Ireland, Parnell was awarded his CMOH for action on June 17, 1877 at White Bird Canyon, Idaho as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st United States Cavalry. His citation reads: "With a few men, in the face of a heavy fire from pursuing Indians and at imminent peril, returned and rescued a soldier whose horse had been killed and who had been left behind in the retreat." After the campaigns, Parnell would eventually reach the rank of Major and Brevet Colonel.
