Artist-Writer. She was known for painting flowers, herbs and insects in precise anatomical detail and is regarded as America's leading botanical artist. Her work is exhibited at the Smithsonian, New York Public Library, Hunt Institute, University of Pittsburgh, Denver Museum of Art and in European galleries. Author of numerous books her works include "Look at a Flower" (1963), Wild Green Things in the City, A Book of Weeds" (1972) and "The Blossom on the Bough, A Book of Trees" (1975). She also illustrated books written by others such as "Shakespeare's Flowers" by Jessica Kerr (1969) and "Roses" by Louis Untermeyer (1970). Her illustrations have been published in House Beautiful, Life, Natural History and Smithsonian magazines. She taught at Manhattanville College, Carnegie-Mellon University, Pratt Institute and was head of the art department at Cooper Union Advancement of Science and Art in New York City for over 30 years. She has received awards from the American Library Assn. and National Science Teachers Assn. She died of natural causes.  (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
