He married Margaret Kitham on November 15, 1838 in Alkham, Kent, England. From marriage records "Thomas Smith (X) 30, bachelor, labourer, of this parish, son of John Smith, labourer to Margaret Kitham, 26, spinster of this parish, daughter of Thomas Kitham, labourer. Wits: Marjery Kitham and Richard Smith (X)"
It appears that Thomas Smith and his 2 surviving daughters, Sarah Anne and Susanna (Susan) Smith, emigrated to USA in 1851, settling in Lenawee County, Michigan.
Sarah Anne married Roswell Hicks and they had a son Arthur P Hicks. Sarah died in childbirth in 1879 at Rome, Lenawee, MI aged 38 years.
Her sister, Susan, married Frank A. Carpenter and the couple settled on an 80 acre farm at Decatur, Van Buren, MI. Along with his farming Frank followed his trade as carpenter.
