He was born on Dec. 27, 1939, in Dubuque, son of Leo and Margaret (Fortman) Sullivan. He graduated from Nativity grade school and Dubuque Senior High School.
John enlisted in the Navy in 1959 and served for three years. He married Rachel Fosello on April 28, 1963, in Jersey City, N.J. The two moved back to Dubuque where John became a self-employed contractor until going to work for Heavy Lift Iron Workers.
He was a member of the Iron Workers Local 89 for many years.
John enjoyed the outdoors and keeping busy all the time. He loved the ocean, fishing and yearly visits to the monastery. He prayed to Padre Pio every day.
John's family is very proud of him, his will to live and his generosity to all. He was a constant fighter who never gave up. As much as the family did not want to see him go, the Lord Jesus Christ has called him to help watch over all of us. He is now in heaven with his children, Phillip and Michelle and family members, waiting for us to come and join them. John believed in Jesus Christ. He opened the door and his heart and welcomed inside the Lord Jesus Christ and accepted him. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
