STEPHEN FUQUA was born in Charlotte County, VA, in 1809 or 1810. Dr. Franklin Fuqua is thought to be his father. His mother's name was Elizabeth.
Stephen was in Texas in the early 1830s as a single man with Fredrick B. Gentry, who was brother of his future wife, Caroline Gentry. Stephen returned to Tennessee and married Caroline on Feb. 4, 1834 in Gibson County.
Taxpayers roll for Austin Colony pioneers in Washington County for the years 1838 and 1840, Stephen Fuqua's name appears. He lived in Washington County when the census was compiled in 1850. In this census of the Republic of Texas he gave his occupation as a farmer and the value of his real estate as $3,500.
In the early 1850s, he moved to Hamilton County, Gentry Mills Community. He resided there until his death in 1862.
Stephen and Caroline were parents of six children born in Texas and two born in Gibson County, TN, on Feb. 4, 1834, Martha J. and Mary E. These were Nancy, born 1842, and married William Collier; George Washington Fuqua, who was born in 1844 and married Margaret E. Lucas; Emily, born in 1846 and married Barton Lucas, James Franklin Fuqua was born Oct. 5, 1847, and died Sept. 15, 1918, in Hamilton County, TX. He was married on Aug. 14, 1868, to Eliza Isobelle Cooper, born Sept. 25, 1852, at Fort Bend County, TX., and died May 10, 1928, in Colorado City, TX. Catherine (Cassiani) Fuqua was born in 1850 and Newton S. was born in 1853 in Hamilton County, TX. Many of his heirs are buried in the Gentry Mills Cemetery in Hamilton County.
