Gratiot County Biographical Album tells that Daniel O. Cuff was the son of Thomas Cuff who was born in Tyrone Co., Ireland and his mother was Clarissa (Frost) Cuff who was born in Brandon, Rutland Co., VT, Daniel Ol Cuff was born May 12, 1834 in Brandon, Rutland Co., VT. He and his parents moved to Sandstone Twp., Jackson Co., MI. His father Thomas and Patrick Cuff took a contract to build a wall at Jackson State Prisn which was constructed of tamarack polls 22 feet long which were set in trenches, thus called " The Tamaracks". His father also bought 3 acres of land and built two log hours, one for himself and the other for his father. That land is now part of the Jackwson Co. Fair Grounds. His father was also one of the first appointed prison guard and held that position for three years. He also was a contracter on the building of Michigan Central Railroad and constrcuted seven miles of railroad track west of the city. Later he purchased 320 acres of land. The homestead was later left at 160 acres with two fine residences and farm buildings. One of the homes being occuped by the family of a son and two younger, Norman and Thomas, residing with their father.

Daniel Cuff first worked as a lumberman. When his father took a contract to furnish stone for paving the streets in Deoit, he help deliver the material to be used and did that for two years. At the age of 20, he moved to Ionia where he was rafting square timbers from Lyons to Iona and Grand Rapids. Daniel Cuff enlisted at Hubbardston in Co K, 21st Mich. Vol. Inf under Capt. Herman Baroth and was in the serive for almost three years. He was appointment Sergeant and on November 12, 1863 was promoted to second Lieutenant. He mustered out on June 8, 1865. He participated in the engagements at Perryville, Stone River, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, Atlanda, Jonesboro, Savannah, Aversboro and Bentonville.

After the war, he moved to St. Louis, he went into business with James S. Eager selling, boots, shoes and groceries. After two years, he sold out and went to work for H. H. Holcomb as foreman in his mills and lumber yard for seven years. He was involved in numerous positions in Gratiot Co., one being appointed under-Sheeriff of Gratiot County in January 1883 by K. P. Peet.

He married Harriet E. Marlett, daughter of Elijah and Sarah (Goodwin) Marlett, on December 10, 1859 in Hubbardston, MI. Harriet E. Marlett was one of six children being born April 13, 1843. Daniel and Harriet Cuff had six children; Florence E. born Sept 5, 1860 and died Oct 17, 1865; Horace E., born Feb 1, 1863 and died Oct. 12, 1870; Norman E. was born born Oct. 15, 1867, William H. Sept 7, 1869; Hattie E., June 24, 1877 and D. O. born Oct. 24, 1880 and died May 6, 1883.

Family tree sources show he was the son of Thomas and Clarissa (Frost) Cuff. He married Harriet Evelyn Marlett on December 10, 1859 in Hubbardston, Ionia Co., MI. They were the parents of Florence E., Horace E., Norman E., William H., Harriet E. "Hattie" and Daniel O. Cuff Jr.

Daughter Harriet E. "Hattie" Cuff was born June 24, 1877 St. Louis, Gratiot Co., MI and passed away January 13, 1966 in Orange Co., California. She married John Joseph Keon (born April 18, 1878 Ireland and died ?) They were the parents of 3 children, D. C., William T. and Living Keon.
