I was at the Pre-Burial Service. The beating drums were like the beating of the heart. The skies were over cast and it finally poured rain like floods of tears. About 500 mourners gathered under rainy skies from every walk and from all over New England. The following quote from Slow Turtle was read: "1 am the Supreme Medicine Man of the Wampanoag Nation. The Wampanoag are indigenous to the portion of the North American continent now called New England. As Supreme Medicine Man, I am charged and empowered to practice the ancestral spiritual teachings of my People. These teachings have been handed down from generation to generation to express our relation to All That Is."
Personal Note: I spent many years with Slow Turtle. He often talked to me about claiming one's "sovereignty" and not leaving it up to others to decide or make your decisions. He said that is the way we see it. I am sad to for his passing and happy to have walked with him.
