Gunnery Sergeant Baum was a member of the 2nd Intelligence Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He joined the Marines in 1986 and volunteered to go to Iraq. He was killed by hostile fire in the Anbar province and was posthumously honored with the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal with "V" device for his actions during the attack. A Purple Heart was also awarded posthumously. According to his company commander, "He died while leading men in battle."
A native of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, Sergeant Baum was a fan of Pittsburgh sports teams and Penn State football. He is the son of Myrle Baum and Connie Hilling and the brother of Brian, Jodi and Kelley. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia, two sons and a daughter.
Sergeant Baum's wife said, "He gave his life for love of his country, the Marine Corps. If Ron could speak to us today, he would say, ‘I am proud to be a husband, father, brother, friend, but above all, proud to be a Marine.'"
