OTTUMWA - Dr.Joseph R."Doc"Berry, 87, of 303 Chester Ave. died at 4:23 am February 12, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born on June 11, 1924 in Waterbury, Connecticut to Joseph and Mary Zarrella Luttazi. He married Hazel Sterling on January 18, 1951. A resident of Ottumwa since 1954, he served in the U.S.Army overseas during World War II.
A graduate of Palmer Chiroproctic School of Medicine in Davenport and National Chiropractic College in Chicago, he opened his business, Dr. Joseph R. Berry, in 1954, retiring in 1996.
He was a member of the Iowa Chiropractic Assoc., O.B.Nelson Post #3 of the American Legion, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #347, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #114 and Knight of Columbus Council #888. Doc enjoyed working with wood especially designing birdhouses. Family gatherings were most important to him.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel; two daughters, Jane(Roger)Scales of Ottumwa and Janine(Sam)Scott of Silt, Colorado; a son, James(Lucy)Berry of Prescott, Arizona; six grandchildren, Brandon, Zachary, Jordan, Halsey, Felicia & Drew and 9 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dr.Jaames Berry and a sister, Madeline Caffrey.
Per his wishes, cremation has been accorded and no services are planned. Memorials may be made to the family.
Reece Funeral home in charge of arrangements.
Cremated, Location of ashes is unknown.
