One of Beloit's eldest ladies, Mrs. Phoebe Ellen Wry Golladay, died at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 1957 at the Community Hospital following a critical illness of one week.
Mrs. Golladay was the daughter of Joseph and Rosetta Hart Wry. She was born in Osceola, Iowa on Tuesday, July 5, 1864. Author's note: (Phoebe's sister-in-law Sarah Golladay married Alic Wry, potential relative.) She was married at Osceola to James Golladay July 3, 1883. They moved to Brewster, Kansas in 1891 and to Beloit in 1910. She was a member of the Methodist church.
Surviving children include Mrs. Stella Covert, Beloit; Walter Golladay, Glen Elder; Mrs. Dora Odle, Beloit; Edward Golladay, Richland Corners, Kansas; and Mrs. Minnie Tweed, Pomona, California. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Flora Pierce, Chackworth, California. Also left are six great-great-grand-children: Marlene, Jimmy and Kathie Frank Salina; Linda and Cynthia Bali, Medicine Lodge, Kansas; and Danny Wolford, Holyrood, Kansas.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon, April 25, at the McDonald Chapel. Rev Boyd Hughes officiated. A male quartette composed by Byron Loades, Charles V. Hartman, Cleo Riley and Rex Quakenbush sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "The Old Rugged Cross" with Mrs. Maurice V. McDonald as organist. Flowers were cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Golladay, Betty Golladay and Ava Weidenhaft.
Burial was in Elmwood cemetery. Pall bearers were Floyd Golladay, Elmer Covert, Roy Covert, Harold Munsey, James Golladay and Marion File.
Out of town relatives here for the services included Mrs. Minnie Tweed, Pomona, California; Mrs. Mary Wolford, Hollyrood, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Fronk, Salina; Mrs. Barbara Ball, Medicine Lodge, Kansas; Billy LeRoy, Nashville, Tennessee; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Covert, Russell, Kansas; and Mr. and Mrs. James Golladay and Susie, San Diego, California.
A second obituary for Phoebe read: Born Tuesday, July 5, 1864 to Joseph Wry and Rosetta Hart at Osceola, Iowa, and died Tuesday, April 23, at 10:30 a.m. in the Beloit Community Hospital, at the age of 92 years, 9 months and 18 days. She had been ill for 1 week and 3 days.
Phoebe Golladay has been a resident of Iowa and Nebraska.
She was united in marriage to James Golladay, on July 3, 1883, at Osceola, Iowa. To this union were born five children, two sons and three daughters.
She is survived by her two sons, Walter Golladay, Glen Elder, Kansas and Edward Golladay, Richland Corners, Kansas; three daughters, Stella Covert and Dora Odle, both of Beloit, Kansas; and Minnie Tweed, Pomona, California; a sister, Flora Pierce, Chatsworth, California; nine grandchildren; 16 great
grandchildren; and 6 great great grandchildren.
She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at the McDonald Chapel at 2:30 p.m. April 25, with the Rev. Boyd Hughes, officiating. Burial was in the Elmwood cemetery.
