Medical Pioneer. He conducted the first rigorous studies of autism, attention deficit disorders and became a prominent advocate for children struggling with disabilities. In 1946, he earned a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and took internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where he developed an interest in psychiatry. After two years in the US Army teaching psychology, he began a residency at Johns Hopkins in 1952. In the 1960s, he performed the first scientific drug trials in child psychiatry, testing stimulants like Dexedrine and Ritalin to soothe the behavior of children identified as "delinquent" or "hyperkinetic." His contributions became the basis for drug treatment of what is now called attention deficit disorder which is now the most excepted science treatment of childhood disorders. He later became chief of psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and continued to publish medical procedures at Harvard Medical School. In the 1980s, he established the medical school's department of social medicine, which tools of medical social science is in the practice of medicine worldwide.
