Birth: Jul. 16, 1982
Baton Rouge
East Baton Rouge Parish
Louisiana, USA
Death: May 3, 2007, Iraq

Cpl. Matthew T. Bolar of Montgomery, Alabama graduated as valedictorian of Canterbury High School in 2002 and joined the Army in 2004. Matthew was quite interested in Military history. Other interests included music and fly fishing. While visiting his father in Alaska, he consistently amazed guides and fellow fisherman by catching the biggest trout or the biggest king salmon. He seemed the most happy when he had a rod in his hand and he sure knew how to use it. Matthew had always aspired to serve in the military, and felt called to do so after the events of September 11, 2001. He was always thinking about someone else. Having already served one deployment overseas, he volunteered to go back to Iraq the second time, feeling like his mission was helping the people in Iraq. The characteristic that was most indicative of Matthew in recent years was his love and respect for his fellow soldiers. He loved the comradeship of the military and kept in close touch with members of his unit when he was home on leave. Matthew closely followed the Louisiana State University Tigers and was also an avid New Orleans Saints fan. When home he was able to attend the NFC Championship Game at Soldier Field between the Saints and the Bears. Pulling for the Saints, a team that struggled over the years, is just one more indication of his loyalty and character. Even in the hard times, he wouldn't give up on the Saints. He died of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit during combat operations at age 24 as he tried to carry out his mission of service to the people of Iraq.
