Army Cpl Buckley was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky, as a gunner. Buckley died of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations. Ryan grew up in Hillsboro, Illinois where he attended Hillsboro High School. He was a very intelligent kid who could work math problems in his head faster than anyone could do them on paper. He spent four years in the marching band and won awards for his music on the French horn. He graduated from Hillsboro in 2003 and joined the Army in March 2004. Pictures of Ryan from high school show a thin, handsome boy with a big smile. Photos of him after he joined the Army show the same smile, but the boy had turned into a man. His unit was deployed to Iraq on November 27, 2005 and his family last heard from him about a week before he died. Ryan loved to go fishing with his father and younger brother. Everyone who met him became his friend – he was that kind of person. He knew about the dangers in Iraq and still joined the military knowing he would be sent "over there" because he felt the need to serve his country. Crowds and hundreds of American flags lined Main Street to the Hillsboro Area Veterans Memorial, where full military rites were performed for Army Cpl. Buckley. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal. Ryan is survived by the love of his life, his wife Tina.
