Mary Jane was the daughter of William Hiram and Malissa Jane Dowdy Jones. She married LeRoy Tramel in 1903 in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). She and Lee had three children; Rosalie, Fred, Margaret and an unnamed baby. Mary and Lee lived at Byars, Oklahoma for many years. She lived near her brothers William Russell, George Washington, Henry Payne and Stephen Dowdy Jones. When Steve's wife died at a young age, Mary helped take care of Steve's seven daughters. She was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Byars chapter, and a longtime member of the Baptist Church.
