Rev. Roy Devaney died at the age of 74 in the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, Worcester. At the time of his death he left a sister, Mary Ejercito of Poughkeepsie, NY; a nephew and nieces; several grandnephews and grandnieces.
He was born in Clinton, the son of Roy J and Mary A. Burke Devaney. He graduated from Clinton High in 1945, attended Holy Cross College, and graduated from the Grand Seminary in Montreal in 1952. Fr. Roy also pursued studies at Assumption College.
Fr. Devaney was ordained on May 22, 1952 and was then assigned to St. John's Church. He later served at St. Bernard's and Our Lady of the Angels churches. He had been pastor of St. Columba's in Paxton, Our Lady of the Lake in the Whalon section of Leominster and St. Mary's Church in Shrewsbury. He retired from St. Mary's in 1992 after eight years as pastor. He also served for many years with the marriage tribunal of the diocese. He is remembered for his ability to make the Scriptures come to life in his homilies.
