He was decended from REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER, Corporal John Conlee born 1750 and the son of Josiah & Priscilla (Crawford) Conlee. He enlisted at Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1860 to fight the Souix Indians and served with the "Northern Border Brigade". Later at the start of the Civil War, he enlisted with the 32nd., Iowa Regiment transferring to the 8th Iowa Regiment and served about 3 1/2 years after which he was honorably discharged. He then returned to Illinois and on May 1, 1868, he united in marriage at Vandalia to Elizabeth Philp McCullough, widow of Jackson McCullough.
