US Navy Rear Admiral. Smith graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1932 and prior to World War II became a Naval aviator. During World War II he was the commanding officer of Air Group 20 under the overall command of Admiral Ralph Davison aboard the carrier U.S.S. Franklin as part of Task Group Four. He participated in the battle of Leyte Gulf as a naval aviator, and was awarded the Navy Cross for his exploits in that battle and later in the War became an "ace". He also was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit and Distinguished Flying Cross. In the late 1950's he was appointed as the Navy's chief information officer and in July of 1959 he was promoted to Rear Admiral. His last command was as the Commander Key West Forces from 1970 to 1971. Because of his passing so shortly after retiring, there's not much info available "out there".
