s/o Maynard Wesley and Margaret (Dixon) Smith;
22-year-old Aviation Cadet M. D. Smith, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #4858 on July 13, 1936. Entered active service via the pre-war Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program.
AVCAD Smith, along with Aviation Machinist Mate Lloyd M. Barnes, were killed when the dive bomber piloted by Smith plunged into the Pacific Ocean 12 miless of Point Loma, Calif., from an altitude of 1,000 feet, and sank in about 1,800 feet of water. Engine failure was believed the cause of crash. There was no attempt to recover either the plane or the bodies.
