After leaving South Carolina, Moses spent time in Tennessee where his first eight children were born. He moved to Blount County, Alabama about 1819. His last five children were born in Alabama.

He was among the first settlers in Blount County, Alabama where he operated a grist mill. Moses operated his mill from 1819 until about 1844, when he sold it to Asa Bynum. About two years before his death, he had a coffin made for himself. He kept it under his bed. Just before he died, he called for his neighbors to come and see how a Christian man could die.
