Civil War Confederate Army Soldier. He enlisted in April 1861 for service with 1st Regiment, Company A, North Carolina Volunteers. He was killed in action on June 10, 1861 at the Battle of Big Bethel in Virginia - the only Confederate fatality. His death made him the first Confederate soldier to die during the Civil War. In 1912 a statue honoring him was erected on the North Carolina State Capitol grounds in Raleigh, North Carolina.
