United States Army Specialist 4 served with the 1st Medical Battalion, First Infantry Division. While on a combat patrol on 28 February 1968, the infantry unit he was accompanying was ambushed, and he rushed to provide aid to several wounded soldiers while under intense enemy fire. While shielding one of his patients from enemy fire with his own body, he was mortally wounded. For his actions on the day he was killed, he was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, America's third highest award for valor, as well as the Purple Heart. His other awards included the Army Commendation Medal and teh Combat Medic Badge.
