Vong Savang
Birth: Sep. 27, 1931
Death: 1980

Laotian Royalty. Born the son of King Savang Vatthana and his queen, Khamphoui at the Royal Palace in Luang Prabang, Laos. He was educated at Montpellier University and l'École Sciences et Politiques in Paris. He married Princess Mahneelai in August 1962 with whom he had seven children. He became the Crown Prince in October the same year. His kingdom suffered through years of intermittent warfare until for nearly a decade, Laos was subjected to heavy bombing just before the fall of Saigon and Phnom Penh to communist insurgents in April 1975. In December of that year, the Communists forced the king to abdicate to be replaced by the communist Lao People's Democratic Republic. The royal family refused to leave Laos and the king accepted a position as advisor to the President. In 1977 the King, Crown Prince, and Queen were arrested and removed to a so-called re-education camp in the northeastern province of Houaphan, they were never seen again and were presumed dead. Most reports suggest that they died in the camp in 1978, their bodies consigned to a common grave. The current Head of the Royal House of Laos is the eldest son of Crown Prince Vong Savang who escaped Laos at the time of his father's arrest and settled in France. (bio by: Iola)
