Betty Lou Bower, 83, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away Thursday, December 18, 2003 at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.

She was born November 30, 1920 in Chanute, the daughter of Thadius and Ethel Jane (Midcap) Slaback.

She grew up and attended schools in Chanute, graduating from Chanute High School in the "Class of 1938". After graduation, she attended Huff Business School in Kansas City.

After business school she worked in the Dress Factory in Chanute as a bookkeeper for one year.

On December 29, 1940, she was united in marriage to Emmett Bower in Parsons, Kansas. He survives of the home.

They moved to Wichita for a year and a half where Emmett worked, they also lived a while in Texas, and in Oklahoma, before moving back to Chanute in 1946.

She was a dedicated wife and mother, raising her family. Then the opportunity to work for the Sears Store arose, moving up to the position of Manager. She retired in 1979 after twenty-seven years of service.

She enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Do-Si-Do Square Dance Club for many years. She was also a member of the Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce and the First United Methodist Church in Chanute.

She loved the outdoors, growing her cactus plants, polishing stones to make jewelry, traveling and sewing.

She is survived by her husband, Emmett, of the home; two daughters, Judy Pique of Raytown, MO, and Linda Wehrle of Shawnee, KS; and one granddaughter, Cynthia Robinson.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside services will be December 22, 2003 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Chanute, Kansas, with Reverend Larry Myers officiating.

Memorials in her honor may be made to Cherry Street Youth Organization.
