John Jasper Owen was born in Anderson County, SC. He married Elizabeth Watson of Anderson (daughter of Maria Smith & Willard Watson). After settling in Franklin County, Ga. JJ was a farmer,a member of Masonic Lodge 186 in Carnesville, and belonged to Hebron Presbyterian Church. He enlisted as Captain of Co. G, 29th Ga. Infantry, CSA in Sept. 1861. He was promoted to Major on Jan 19, 1864, after the Battle of Chickamauga. He resigned under a surgeon's certificate on Nov. 18, 1864. He divorced Elizabeth Watson in the 1880's. He later married Nancy Parker, and moved to Bienville Parish, Loiuisiana, where he lived the rest of his life.
