On June 10, 1709 with both called of Lebanon, Conn., John m. 1) at Chilmark, on Martha's Vineyard, Mass. (by James Allen, Esq., the bride's cousin), Lydia Thacher, dau. of Rev. Rhodolphus Thacher and Ruth Partridge. Lydia's oldest brother Thomas m. John Dean's two-year younger sister Mary at Lebanon, Conn. Nov. 16, 1704.
John Dean and Lydia Thacher had six children, the first of record at Plainfield, Conn. and the next five of record at Groton, Conn. By Oct. 1748, in John Dean's will only two of the children were living, married son Barzillai assumed to have recently died in England or during his return to Connecticut:
• i. Silas Dean, b. Sept. 14, 1709; m. Hannah Barker Nov. 21, 1734 at the Lebanon 1st Cong. Chh. Eight children recorded at Groton, including eldest son Silas Dean, Jr.
• ii. Anna Dean, b. May 27, 1711; d. young May 29, 1723.
• iii. John Dean, Jr., b. May 27, 1713; m. Sarah Douglass at Groton, Conn. Dec. 21, 1738. In Feb. 1753 he was residing as Ens. John Dean at Salisbury, Conn.
• iv. Rev. Barzillai Dean, b. Dec. 28, 1714, died at sea while returning from England following taking orders in the Episcopal Church; m. Mary Brown at Stratford, Conn. Oct. 5, 1738. "Three daughters" included by name ("Lydia Mary & Livinia") in their paternal grandfather's 1748 will.
• v. Lydia Dean, b. Apr. 16, 1721; d. young Dec. 12, 1726.
• vi. Barnabas Dean, b. Jan. 31, 1724/5; d. in infancy Dec. 9, 1726.
Wife Lydia d. of record at Groton, Conn. Jan. 15, 1737/8. On an unknown date and at an unknown place, John Dean m. 2) Sarah, whose maiden name has not been uncovered. She was from Stonington, Conn. and probably a widow at their marriage, and owned her own farm at Stonington. She survived John, with an extensive provision concerning her in John's Oct. 1748 will.
