Rev. Porter S. Burbank, was a bro. of Rev. Samuel Burbank, (1792-1845), and 3rd in family to enter the ministry, and son of Samuel Burbank, a native of Rowley, Mass., and Susanna (Graves) Burbank, of Brentwood, NH.
He graduated Dartmouth, College in 1832, but took 3 yrs of his course in Waterville, College, ME. He prepared for college at Limerick Academy and Parsonfield Seminary.
Self-reliance and courage were required in procuring his education. At age 16 he was employed as apprentice under Wm. Burr in the "Morning Star" printing office at Limerick, and helped set type for the first number of that paper.
During his three yrs apprenticeship he became possessed with an intense disire for an education.
While fitting himself to teach he felt the call to the ministry. He preached some while at Waterville College, and was licensed by Waterville Q.M., at Industry, ME, 1836.

During his active ministry he probably taught a score of high schools. He loved to teach but at the close of his 3 yrs as principal of Stafford Academy, NH, he longed for the active work of the ministry.
He was ordained at a session of NH Yearly Meeting, June 13, 1840. He afterwards taught a few terms at Parsonfield Seminary. A call to take charge of Clinton Seminary, NY and Whitestown Seminary was declined.
He was corresponding seretary of the Education Society six consecutive yrs. He was frequently on its board, and often made chairman of committees on education at General Conference. He was one of the committee that compiled the "Psalmody."
He was heartily interested in Temperance and Anti-slavery causes and the benevolent causes of the denomination, especially, the "Morning Star," newspaper, with which he was corresponding editor from 1833-1866.
He held pastorates in Hampton, Deerfield, New Hampton, and Danville, NH and in West Buxton and Lemerick, ME.
His ministry was eminently successful
Several efficient Free Baptist ministers were converted in revivals in churches he pastored.
At the close of his last pastorate at Danville, NH, he purchased a home in So. Parsonfield, ME, where he spent the last ten yrs of his life. He supplied the church there one year and preached occassionally afterward.
He d. July 21, 1883, 73 yrs and was bur. at Limerick.
His wife, [Miriam] to whom he was married 46 years survived him."
