A Wake service for Howard Anderson, 82, of Pella was held September 4, at the Chapel of the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella, the Rev. Mr. William Wiegand officiated.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held September 5, 2002 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pella with Father Robert D. Gruss, celebrant. Music was provided by organist Mrs. Robin Nossaman and soloist Mrs. Lynn Cooper.
Interment was at Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. Casket bearers were David Blauw, C.L. Leydens, William Moll, Tim Battistello, Mike Hamre and Mark Peiffer.
Howard Robert Anderson, a son of Lee Hampton Anderson and Heddie Joy (Antle) Anderson, was born on May 13, 1920 at Earlham, Iowa. Howard was educated in the Winterset public schools and graduated from Winterset High School with the class of 1938.
He enlisted with the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and served for three years in Italy. After returning home after the service, Howard then became employed with Arthur Mathes General Construction Company and worked in several states and locations. He was also involved in the building of the Pella Municipal Water Treatment Plant.
On October 29, 1950 he was united in marriage with Candida Olga Buttel at St.
Anthony's Catholic Church in Knoxville. They eventually settled in Pella. Howard then became employed at Vermeer Manufacturing and retired there after 30 years of service.
Connie, as she was known, worked as a beautician for about 20 years and was the operator of the Garden Beauty Shop in Pella until her health necessitated her retirement.
Howard and Connie enjoyed gardening, raising flowers and fishing together. Their family will remember the large dinners they held on holidays.
Connie was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer and subsequently died on February 7, 1986 at the early age of 66 years.
Following her death, Howard became a greeter at the Pella Wal-Mart where he was known as "Mr. Wal-Mart" by many people.
In January of 2001, his own health began to decline and he became a resident of the Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville. Then In April of 2001, Howard became a resident of the Sheltered Care Unit of the Pella Regional Health Center, and passed away on Sunday morning, September 1, 2002 attaining the age of 82 years, 3 months and 19 days.
Howard was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pella, the American Legion Post No. 89 in Pella, and was a former council member of the Pella City Council from 1968-1971.
He enjoyed reading and treasured his yard pond watching the goldfish and listening to the fountain.
Of his original family Howard leaves a brother: Wallace and his wife, Valma Anderson of Des Moines; 4 nieces; 6 great-nieces; 6 great-nephews; and one great-great-niece.
He was preceded in death by his dear wife Connie; his parents; two sisters: Carol and May Anderson; and a brother Wayne Anderson.
Arrangements were handled by Van Dyk - Duven Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the building fund of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pella.

Howard Raymond Anderson, 82, of Pella died September 1, 2002, at the Sheltered Care Unit of Pella Regional Health Center, Pella.
He was born May 13,1920 in Earlham, the son of Lee Hampton and and Hettie Joy (Antle) Anderson.
He married Candida Buttel on Oct. 29, 1950 in Knoxville. She preceded him in death on Feb. 7, 1986.
Survivors include a brother, Wally Anderson of Des Moines; brother-in-law, Clyde Craver of Centerville; and several nieces and nephews.
He served in the United States Army during World War II. He retired from Vermeer Manufacturing and Wal-Mart in Pella. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Pella and American Legion Post No. 89, Pella.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Pella. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella with the family present from 6-8 p.m. There will be a Rosary at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be given to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Pella.
