Judy Helseth McCarthy, born March 18, 1948, in Columbus, Mont., died unexpectedly on Feb. 9, 2008, in San Diego, Calif. She was the loving wife of Stephen McCarthy for 37 years. Growing up in Watertown, S.D., she attended St. John's School of Nursing in Huron, S.D. Upon graduation she joined the USAF to see the world. Assigned to Loring AFB, Maine, she met her husband Steve. They were assigned to Turkey where Judy resigned her commission to be a fulltime homemaker.

Starting in 1973, she made her home in Omaha, Neb. In 1978, Judy was injured in a horrific accident leaving her a paraplegic. She said she had three choices: become a recluse, retreat to be a bitter old lady or deal with what God gave her. Our family is blessed that she chose the latter. Her life example educated many people about positive attitude, handicapped capabilities and just plain enjoying life. Her ever-ready smile and love will be with us forever.

Judy and Steve moved to Prescott in 1999 to enjoy the natural ambiance, the small-town community life and good weather.

One year ago, Judy was selected to receive a service dog, Rosie, who opened up new joy in her heart. Judy and Rosie were inseparable around town. Helpful, playful and loving are the three words to describe their all too brief relationship.

Judy reveled in great cooking, Omaha Children's Hospital volunteer work and family matters. Her husband Steve; three children, Patrick (Shelby), Sara Backhus (Andrew) and Christopher (Evie); and three grandchildren, Margaret F. Backhus, Miles C. Backhus and Keira Judith McCarthy, survive her.

Judy was strong in her Catholic faith that God gave her the strength to deal with her challenges. Our family prays that every hair on her head be a candle to light her soul to glory.

Flowers gratefully declined. Memorials should go to Canine Companions for Independence, P.O. Box 4568, Oceanside, CA 92052.

Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home, 303 S. Cortez St., Prescott. Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Sacred Heart Church, 150 Fleury Ave., Prescott.

Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with final arrangements.
