Samuel Jacob Lewis was born a twin of James L. Lewis. They were born in Ohio in September of 1847. Samuel and Jacob were the first sons of John Lewis and Martha Lutton (sometimes spelled "Sutton").

Samuel served with Union allegiance in the Civil War with the 47th Wisconsin Infantry, Company B. He was later a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), a fraternal organization for Civil War veterans.

Samuel married Alice Maria Beebe around 1879, and they subsequently had 4 children: Leslie Edward, Martha (Mattie), Myrtle, and Edna Lavisa. The family traveled across the country via covered wagon and train, living in several states including Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, the Dakota Territories, Colorado (birth of 2nd daughter occurred here), and Oregon, ultimately settling in California. Myrtle and Alice died on a journey to Oregon in 1900 and 1901.

During his life, Samuel was a Farmer, a Tinner and a Dairy farmer. About 1915, Samuel married a second time to Belle Simpson.
