Carolina Hershkowitz

Carolina Macias Hershkowitz was born on Nov. 3, 1914 in Wickenburg, Arizona, to Francisco Macias and Aurora Rodriguez Macias. Her grandfather Ramon Macias and grandmother Canuta Carrasco Macias ranched 160 acres along the Hassayampa River in the early 1860s. She resided on a portion of the original homestead.

Carolina passed away peacefully on May 20 in Canoga Park, Calif., near her two sons, Alfred and Leroy Hershkowitz. She was preceded in death by her young daughter Diana Aleine in 1937, husband Allen in 1988, sister Carmen Macias Warner, and four brothers, Manuel, Frank, Raymond and Alfred Macias and by her parents and grandparents.

She is survived by her sons Alfred and wife Judy Hershkowitz, and Leroy Howard Hershkowitz; grandchildren Gary Hershkowitz, Bruce Hershkowitz, Theresa Blair, and Becky Gittins; and great-grandchildren Missy Hershkowitz, Anthony Hershkowitz, Robin Schmit, Michelle Blair, Heather, and Bryan Michael Gittins.

Also surviving is sister-in-law Belle Hershkowitz Deck of Congress, and numerous nephews and nieces, cousins and friends. Her great-niece, Julia Macias Brooks, was her caregiver and confidant for many years.

Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 24 at the Wickenburg Funeral Home.

Funeral Mass is scheduled for Friday, May 25 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Wickenburg. Celebrant is Fr. John Vogt. Pallbearers include Mike Macias, Frank Macias, Alex Macias, Art Brooks, Frank Hershkowitz, and Larry Hershkowitz. Interment will be in the Garcia Pioneer Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to: Fiesta Septiembre, c/o Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce, 216 N. Frontier St., Wickenburg, Ariz. 85390.
